Grady Banes talks about growing up on a sheep farm, one adjacent to fellow New Zealander and his best friend, Ashton Martyn.
"Yeah," he says with a grin. "I've known Ashton since he was small, which looking at him you wouldn't think was possible, but it's bloody true. He was tiny once, I swear." Born in March 1981 to sheep farmer parents, he was eleven before he met his best friend, having not lived in one place longer than a year before that. "We moved around a lot, with those goddamn sheep. Gentle creatures you would think, till one kicks you in the family jewels."
Grady Aristotle Banes was more than just a best friend though, he was also a bassist in Ashton's band Silverchair, starting when they were both teenagers and gaining worldwide fame. "Neither of us handled fame all that well. It was part of the reason we disbanded." Disbanded and got back together to release 2009's Young Modern. After that, they went their separate ways and Grady went to New Zealand again, deciding to write and form a band.
That band became Affecting Gray, which released their debut album Sigh No More earlier this year. A blend of literary references ("Dust Bowl Dance" heavily draws from the imagery of John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath) and folk-rock, Affecting Gray has become one of the hottest bands, selling out shows in North America, Europe and Australia. Sigh No More was just announced as the number one folk-rock album on US Billboard's Folk Charts and number sixteen on it's 200 Charts.
Their tour having ending, Grady talks about plans to get back to writing, and maybe touring more. "But most of all, I want to figure out what Grady is. Am I an asshole? A nice guy? That's what I want to know." We don't know, but we look forward to more. |
